Is the second round of Jupiter airdrop coming? A summary of the existing clues
The founder announced this morning: "Major news will be announced soon."
Author: Azuma, Odaily Planet Daily
In the early hours of November 4, meow, the founder of Jupiter, responded to discussions about his and the team's financial motivations on X, mentioning that he would continue to devote himself wholeheartedly to JUP for a long time and hinted at significant news to be announced soon.
Given the topics of focus within the Jupiter community over the years, this "significant news" is hard not to associate with the next round of airdrops that Jupiter vaguely hinted at during the inception of JUP.
Will there be a next round of airdrops? How many shares are left?
One thing that can be confirmed is that there will definitely be a next round of airdrops.
Before the inception of JUP, meow published a lengthy article introducing Jupiter's airdrop plan, which mentioned that the distribution model for JUP allocates 50% to the team and 50% to the community, with "40% of JUP to be distributed in four rounds of airdrops" within the community portion.
In January 2024, Jupiter launched the first round of airdrop activities, Jupuary, distributing 10% of the JUP supply to the community for the first time. According to the initial plan, this means that Jupiter has reserved 30% of the JUP supply for future airdrops, which amounts to 3 billion JUP.
However, in early August 2024, the Jupiter community passed a significant proposal regarding the disposal of JUP with a 95% approval rate (J 4 J #1), which decided to burn 3 billion JUP (30% of the total supply) to reduce Jupiter's maximum supply. This proposal required both the team and the community to burn half, resulting in a change in the reserved JUP shares for future airdrops.
Meow detailed the specific changes in the proposal. As shown in the figure below (orange represents data before the burn, green represents data after the burn), the number in the "Subsequent Jupuaries" column, representing future airdrop shares, decreased from 3 billion to 2.1 billion, which is a 30% reduction in line with the total supply.
In summary, Jupiter has reserved 2.1 billion JUP for subsequent airdrops. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that from the above figure and various statements from the team, it can be seen that Jupiter still hopes to refer to future airdrop activities as Jupuary, a term derived from the combination of Jupiter and January (the month of the first airdrop), leading the community to generally speculate that subsequent airdrops are likely to occur every January.
Founder’s Statement
In the past few months, meow has frequently discussed matters related to the next round of Jupuary in public community forums, and we can catch some hints from his words.
On March 21, meow mentioned that the next round of Jupuary would have quite different standards, and the community would discuss this. He also noted that discussions for the first round of Jupuary began in November 2023 (with the airdrop execution taking three months), and the Core Working Group (CWG) would be responsible for advancing discussions for the new round of Jupuary.
On July 1, meow stated in response to the community that he would be pleased to see the next round of Jupuary become a community-driven matter rather than determined by his personal will, mentioning that related voting would take place in the coming weeks (which has been delayed).
On October 9, meow responded to the community regarding the snapshot standards for the next round of Jupuary, stating: "The snapshot might be a bit late, possibly by the end of this year, but it’s not certain yet."
On the same day, meow also emphasized: "In any case, please do not use Jupiter for airdrop purposes; Jupiter is meant for real users. Go interact with other projects. We have never needed, and will never need, 'users' driven by airdrops. If Jupuary happens again, it will just be a gift from the community to real users."
From meow's multiple statements, it is evident that he prefers the community to lead discussions on the feasibility and specific plans for the new round of Jupuary, with expectations pointing towards later this year.
Community Reaction
If you open Jupiter's governance forum, it is not difficult to find that almost all popular discussions within the community are pointing towards topics related to the second round of airdrops, with many community members (including some well-known individuals and institutions) even proposing their own designed airdrop plans.
Taking the most discussed post as an example (authored by Solana developer Zandor, who has explicitly stated that he is not affiliated with the Jupiter team, and the distribution plan is merely his personal suggestion, not the final standard), he suggested airdropping about 700 million JUP in the second round of Jupuary, which is one-third of the remaining 2.1 billion tokens.
Zandor proposed to divide the distribution into two main parts. The first part is a universal airdrop, distributing 250 million JUP to real users of various products under Jupiter (including JUP staking, spot trading, contract trading, JLP market making, and other community contributors, etc.); the second part is an advanced airdrop, which rewards real users based on their actual trading volume after "dehydrating" the trading volume of all users, totaling 450 million JUP to be distributed.
Odaily Note: The above distribution is merely Zandor's personal suggestion and not the final standard.
Zandor's proposal has received significant support within the community, but some community members have explicitly opposed distribution based on trading volume, and related discussions are still ongoing.
Waiting for the Official Announcement
Considering the current situation, it can be preliminarily predicted that Jupiter is likely to advance matters related to the second round of airdrops in the coming months. As the most successful project in the Solana ecosystem to date, coupled with the positive response to Jupiter's first round of airdrops, this gives users another space for imagination.
However, it is important to note that Jupiter has not yet clarified the details of the second round of airdrops through official channels, and how it will proceed still needs to wait for an official statement. There are already some phishing traps regarding Jupiter's second round of airdrops on social media, so please remain cautious.
