Black Myth: Wukong continued making its mark on gaming in 2024 by winning the “Ultimate Game of the Year” title at the Golden Joystick Awards. Wukong’s director, Feng Ji, in a short acceptance speech, teased that game players are in for surprises later this year prior to the release of its first DLC.

The gaming world has taken a “Journey to the West” ever since Game Science released Black Myth Wukong in August 2024. The action role-player game based on Chinese mythology stirred a storm and quickly became a cultural classic in the gaming sphere.

The game continued its historic run by getting nominated for multiple Game of the Year awards, many of which the RPG is expected to win.

Feng Ji teases surprises as Joystick Awards

The 42nd edition of the annual Golden Joystick Awards 2024 culminated in an “Ultimate Game of the Year” for Black Myth: Wukong. During the ceremony, Feng Ji, founder and CEO of Game Science, thanked gamers around the world for their support, stating that it enabled the studio to foray into “uncharted territory.”

Ji also addressed players who have finished the game and those yet to play it, stating that they have “one more reason to play” as there may be surprises waiting for them “later this year.” The game’s director did not specify what the surprises are. The missing information has led the public to speculate about the subject.

Prior to Black Myth: Wukong’s release, the game ranked high on the “most anticipated” list, with its release in August meeting and going beyond expectations. The game’s visuals, intricate combat, and gameplay drew praise from different circles, propelling Game Science to new heights.

Wukong has earned several nominations for Game of the Year. The RPG was nominated at the Golden Joystick Awards (won), Thailand Game Awards (won), and The Game Awards in 2024 (pending). Wukong’s track record establishes it as the first AAA game created and published by the Chinese game industry. This could catalyze the development of more console and PC games from the mobile-dominant industry.

Gamers’ speculation builds after Ultimate Game Award win

After Feng Ji’s reveal, speculation spread like wildfire, with many gamers guessing what the teased surprises may be. Most gamers speculated that the surprise could be an official announcement of the game’s DLC, which has been unofficially revealed. Others suggested it may be about its availability on Xbox Game Pass.

The gamers speculated that Game Science might release a trailer for the DLC during the next few weeks as a leak had revealed that the RPG’s first DLC was in the works and would be released around the Chinese New Year in January 2025.

Gamer speculation was not limited to DLCs and Game Pass availability. Some gamers also speculated the surprises may include a physical release of the Chinese-developed game and Wukong merchandise.

Some gamers also speculated that the surprise may be a PlayStation 5 Pro patch. Many PlayStation 5 Pro players have lodged complaints about the game’s frame rates on their consoles since its release. As a result, a surprising number of gamers expressed hope that the teased surprises will resolve the issue.
