AI and blockchain convergence to create new opportunities in 2025

The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, robotics, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) is expected to create significant opportunities by 2025.

Christian Thompson, managing director of the Sui Foundation, discussed these developments at the Consensus 2025 event in Hong Kong.

He emphasised that integrating AI into blockchain could lead to transformative "watershed moments" as these technologies evolve together.

"As these technologies converge, you get these watershed moments; I think we’re peering over the edge as it relates to blockchain and AI," Thompson noted.

The integration of AI into blockchain is already underway, with companies using AI to enhance user experiences and operational efficiency.

For instance, Kite AI recently launched an AI-focused testnet to improve decentralised applications, while the 0G Foundation has introduced an $88.88 million fund to support AI-powered DeFi projects.

Thompson believes regulatory clarity will drive broader adoption of blockchain-based payment systems and attract investment.

"Once you get some regulatory clarity, you will open up a world of investment," he stated.

As the transition from Web2 to Web3 progresses, Thompson anticipates a rise in experimentation and research, fostering innovation across multiple sectors.

However, regulatory challenges remain, with lawmakers like Senator Elizabeth Warren pushing for stricter crypto regulations.

Despite these hurdles, AI and blockchain convergence is expected to drive new applications and opportunities as both technologies continue to mature.
